Bedfont still top.....
Great result by the boys today
Our normal coach was away this weekend, so I was called in as sub after leading the team through the Christmas Break to help out again, able assisted by the ever quiet Teresa shouting encouragement from the side lines. The team were without our normal target man Nojus upfront, so I needed the boys to all keep focus and play as a team and contribute, and they as so often this year, did not disappoint.
Bedfont kicked off with Diego as the lone striker with Callaghan and Andrew playing down the wings to provide support. Adam and Robert were in the central midfield positions and right from the off, Bedfont were on top with an early chance which didn't quite come off. It wasn't long until Callaghan who had definitely brought his shooting boots today went on a run from the left and fired a bullet into the top corner, 1-0 Bedfont. Cougars were playing well and defending stoutly, but they were up against a team in form and working well right from the back through to the front. Callaghan had another chance which hit the cross bar, a freekick that just went over and then Andrew had a good shot saved. The pressure was building and more nice moves were just not coming off. Although inbetween the chances from Andrew and Diego, Callaghan did get his second of the game to make it 2-0.
Diego who normally is offering so much from the wing, was a little isolated and although I was proud of his commitment to the task of striker and he didn't go wandering, I felt we needed to try mixing it up. I called to Andrew and Diego to switch places and instantly it paid dividends. Diego picked up the ball on the right and ran down the line and crossed to Andrew who duly scored to make it 3-0. Even as a stand-in manager, I was happy with that and will claim the assist :). Not long later Callaghan completed his hat trick all before half time to make it 4.0.
Following half time, the Cougar's had a good chance which showed the boys they needed to keep focus and despite the growing score line this was at no point an easy game. Following some pressure from the visitors, Bedfont started to get back control and a great chance from Andrew followed which came out to Robert who shot over - really unlucky, but a great piece of football all round. Robert was having a great game and the boys were cheering him on to break his duck. More chances came and went, with one brave diving header from Callaghan which deserved a goal. On came Georgie and Zain replacing Andrew and Adam, but the momentum and play continued. Adam commented how Jack and Joel were having a great game and nothing had got passed them, which was a real complement for a team 4-0 up, but he was right, they along with Dennis were playing an assured and controlled game at the back, from which all the team's attacking flare could build from.
More goals came, first from Diego 5-0, then Georgie, super sub as always got on the score sheet to make it 6-0. More chances denied by the crossbar and the keeper who despite the scoreline was playing really well. Then Jack was playing more and more up the field had the ball down by the corner flag, as he had done all game he didn't panic, shielded the ball and then played it out for it to then be crossed and Callaghan get his fourth and Bedfont's seventh. Robert cheered on from the subs and co-coach Teresa went close and then finally he found himself in the box to take Bedfont to 8-0 and the fans and bench go crazy. I am not sure what Cougar's thought considering it was 8-0, but it meant a lot to Robert and the rest of the boys, which shows what a great team spirit we have. Finally Diego scored again to make it 9-0.
Overall a fantastic performance, with special mentions to Callaghan, Diego, Jack, and Joel. However, the team universally agreed and chanted that there was a clear MOM - Robert. Well done
