Eagles reach Semi of League Cup

Eagles 2 Shelton Athletic 1 (AET)

Eagles took on Shelton in the quarter final of the league cup, knowing that this would be a tough challenge. Shelton had already beaten us 2-1 on the opening day of the season. So the dressing room chat was about getting the boys motifated for the job in hand. All the talk must have fallen on deaf ears, as we were second best for the first half and fortunate to come in only one down. The reshuffle of the team had started to reap rewards towards the end of the half & we encouraged the boys not to leave anything in the locker and fight for the team. Within 5 minutes of the restart, Eagles were level, Zola getting on the end of the left wing cross and finishing with ease. Eagles were now the side looking as if they would score another goal, but chance after chance went a begging. Chris was having to be a rock at the back, and time after time he was sweeping up the ball or making a strong challenge to relieve the pressure. Zola was trekking back and making sure the left back did not hurt us. With only seconds left of the 2nd half Shelton broke through one on one with Daniel, daniel made himself big and saved the ball with his foot. The Full time whistle blew and extra time was required.
By now Eagles had injuries and changes were made, Jake had to come off with a Hamstring problem, Troy had ill affects from the previous nights party, Zola pulled up with a lower back strain, but back to the game. The first period of extra time finished goaless and the boys were encouraged to be brave and search for the winner. with a couple of minutes left to go, Cain finally got his goal and the boys kept working for each other until the final whistle. One final scare with the last attack of the game, but the shelton player was off-side.
