Reece Cave early goal secures sports 3 points

Sports wrapped up the perfect bank holiday weekend with their second win in just three days; this against Chertsey and the first of their Isthmian league campaign

In searing conditions it was important they got off to a strong start and, care of Reece Cave's thunderous 4th minute strike, they were able to do just that. Breaking away from a tackle around 25 yards out, he forged toward the box before unleashing an unstoppable drive from the edge of the area which flew past Chertsey's keeper and in to the corner.

Both teams struggled to get a foothold in the game with the heat proving difficult for the players. Eventually Chertsey worked an opportunity with a good move on the half hour mark but their midfielder didn't connect properly.

It was not through the lack of effort that chances were few and far between as Sports' industrious midfield were working hard to press and force Chertsey in to mistakes. Jayden did just this but dragged his shot wide and Didi carried on his form from Saturday giving the right back a torrid time. It was Didi who had the only real other clear cut chance of the half. Great work by Keanu in the box on 36 broke to Didi whose fierce drive was blocked by the onrushing keeper's chest at the near post.

A fairly even first half came to a close with Cave's great strike the difference between the teams.

The flow of the second half echoed that of most of the first; a lot of hard work but no real clear cut chances. The only real highlight of the first 20 minutes being Didi's lovely curling effort from the edge of the box which whistled past the post with the keeper beaten.

Chertsey then nearly equalised. A pinpoint cross from the left back was met perfectly by the forward whose header was curling in to the corner. This was before Churchill flung himself to his right to produce a wonderful save and maintain Sports' slender advantage.

Sports' had the better of the next 10 minuets with Jayden again creating his own opportunity but his rising drive was just a little too high but had the keeper worried. A well worked short corner followed shortly afterwards which forced the keeper in to a smart save at his near post as Sports looked to put the game to bed.

The visitors nearly benefitted from some real indecision at the back. A mix up with Churchill and the defence led to the ball falling nicely to their forward. Thankfully for Bedfont, he took the wrong option and went to chip the keeper which landed gratefully in his arms.

Didi almost got the goal that his performance deserved on 85 as he received the ball out wide, drove in to the box but saw two efforts blocked by the keeper when he seemed certain to score.

If those two opportunities seemed clear cut, the next chance was truly guilt-edged. A long ball over the Chertsey defence was chased down by Sports as they rounded the keeper who had tried to intercept the ball. Unfortunately they were forced wide but a great cross was sent in to the back post where Keanu met it with his head. He seemed to jump a little early and caught the ball on his way down which led to his header cannoning back off the bar.

Thankfully Sports weren't made to pay for these missed chances as they saw the game out for their first league win of the season.
