Bedfont u15 finally got their hands on some silverware after beating Leatherhead 2-1 in the League Cup Final. This following defeat in the Middx county cup on penalties and coming runners-up in the Premier Elite Division to our league cup final opponents.
After winning our league, Leatherhead were confident and settled quicker and had most of the possession in the first 10 minutes, but without really creating any chances. Bedfont then took a grip of the game and starting knocking the ball around well, creating some half chances with Steve Sargeant playing in a more advanced role looking dangerous. Corners and set pieces were causing the Leatherhead defence all sorts of problems before one finally paid off in the 34th minute. A great ball in from a corner by Dean McDonnell was headed home on the six yard box by Malachi Calliste-Thompson. HT 1-0.
Leatherhead were always going to come after Bedfont at the start of the 2nd half, but were looking for the long ball over the top as a way through. Bedfont weathered a number of corners and free kicks in the first 15 minutes, but were still playing good football and creating chances with a header from Billy Moone following one corner, being cleared off the line. Steve Sargeant beat 4 men around the box, but couldn't quite get the ball onto his left foot to have a decent shot. Leatherhead then equalised after 20 mins with a soft penalty being conceded to bring the game level. Bedfont didn't panic and went about looking for the winner, but were unable to get that final shot off to beat the opposing gk. With players starting to tire, the game went into extra time. FT 1-1
Following defeat on pens in the Middx cup, Bedfont came out determined, confident and strong in extra time. Steve Sargeant was finally rewarded with a goal in the 4th minute of extra time. The ball was played into him on the left hand edge of the box. He easily went past the defender before hitting a first time shot which took the Leatherhead gk completely by surprise as it nestled in the far corner. Messi would have been proud of that left foot strike !!!! In his joy of scoring, Steve had to be replaced as he was completely shattered, then found out his mum had missed the goal as she was at the bar. Ah well, just have to see it on the match video. Jack Twomey stretched for a cross but was just unable to steer it goalwards but Bedfont easily saw out the last 10 mins of extra time.
Jason Konstantis had a great chance to seal the win in the 2nd half of extra time, but his dink fell just over the bar. Billy Moone then had to be replaced with a suspected broken nose following an accidental clash of heads, and with Malachi and Jake off the pitch with cramp, the defence was certainly patched up. In the final 2 mins of the games, Leatherhead had their only two real clear cut chances of the game. A huge punt over the top saw their striker collect the ball on the edge of the box. He shot to the near post where Sam Rattigan gathered comfortably.
The whistle finally blew with Bedfont fully deserved winners. They will look back at throwing away the league with a couple of indifferent games, and the unfortunate loss in the county cup on pens. But a great win to end the season on a high. The boys have been magnificent all season and are a credit to themselves and the club.
